Free trial
New users get one 21-day trial of Pro per device — no account and no payment method required. The trial runs for 21 calendar days from activation; downloading or installing doesn’t start the clock.
When the trial ends, sight·line reverts to the Free tier. This is non-destructive: all your data stays intact and remains exportable. You can enter a license key at any time to move onto a paid plan.
Installing sight·line
sight·line is available on:
- macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) — native desktop app via installer
- Windows (x64) — native desktop app via installer
Both keep your data on your device. There is no mandatory cloud sync.
Activating your license
sight·line starts in the Free tier, and new users can take a 21-day Pro trial (see above). To unlock Starter or Pro, you need a license key.
Getting a license key
- Purchase a license from the pricing page
- You’ll receive an email with your license key
Entering your license key
- Open sight·line
- Go to Settings (gear icon at bottom of Student Picker)
- Tap Licensing or License Management
- Paste your license key and tap Activate
- sight·line validates the key with Keygen (our license server) and unlocks your tier immediately
Your device is now registered to that license. You can deactivate the license from the same Settings panel if you want to activate it on another machine.
Checking your current tier
From the Student Picker, open Settings > Licensing. You’ll see:
- Your current tier (Free, Starter, or Pro)
- License expiration date, if applicable
- Device registration status
- Options to revalidate, deactivate, or upgrade
License validation and grace period
sight·line validates your license with Keygen approximately every 30 days to ensure it’s still active and hasn’t been revoked. Validation happens automatically in the background.
Grace period: If you’re offline or the validation server is unreachable, sight·line enters a 7-day grace period. You can continue using your licensed tier during this time. Once online, the next validation resets the grace period clock.
After the grace period expires: If validation has not succeeded in about 37 days (30 + 7), sight·line reverts to the Free tier, even if your license key was previously valid. This is non-destructive — your data stays intact, and re-validating restores your tier.
Device activation and deactivation
Each license activates one desktop device at a time. To move your license to a different machine:
- Deactivate the license on the current device: go to Settings > Licensing and tap Deactivate
- Activate the key on the new device following the steps above
Deactivating releases the activation so another machine can use it. If you can’t access the old device to deactivate it, contact [email protected] to release the activation.
The iOS companion app pairs with your licensed desktop and does not consume a device activation.
Offline use
sight·line works entirely offline — you can record sessions, view results, export PDFs, and use all observation methods without an internet connection. License validation happens when you’re online; validation failure doesn’t prevent you from using features you’ve already unlocked (within the grace period).
Upgrading or downgrading
From Settings > Licensing, you can:
- Upgrade to a higher tier by entering a new license key
- Downgrade by deactivating and returning to the Free tier (or activating a lower-tier license key)
Downgrading may disable features you were using — for example, if you move from Starter to Free, your sessions display as a single list instead of being organized by student, and PDF export locks until you upgrade again. Your existing data is never deleted.
Privacy and licensing
License validation sends only:
- Your license key (to verify validity)
- A machine fingerprint (to track device activation)
- The app version number (for diagnostics)
No student data is ever transmitted during license validation, and all AI runs on-device. Validation happens only when you activate a license or when the background validation check runs (approximately every 30 days).
